A note from our roastery:
We’ve changed the name of La Pastora to La Pradera to more accurately reflect and honor the specific farm that grows this coffee. “La Pastora” referred to a larger conglomerate of growers in the Los Santos region of Costa Rica, but over the years we’ve developed a relationship with a single farm in this region—Hacienda La Pradera. We have personally visited this farm, met the producers, and are honored to be sourcing this directly from them.
We’ve been roasting and serving this coffee for a while now, and we feel it’s important to change the name out of respect to the producers.
It’s the same origin (Costa Rica), same region (San José), same sub-region (Los Santos), same flavor profile—just more direct, consistent, and relational to further our mission of creating great coffees, meaningful relationships, and a better world.
This Coffee’s Journey
Costa Rica La Pradera
ORIGIN: Los Santos, Costa Rica
PRODUCER: Hacienda La Pradera
ALTITUDE: 1550 MASL
PROCESS: Washed
VARIETAL: Caturra
Hacienda La Pradera is a 181 hectare coffee farm in the heart of the Los Santos region at 1,550 meters above sea level. The bulk of its harvest is from the caturra variety which is well suited to the soil and climate of the area.
Since 2012 La Pradera has also been planting and nurturing multiple other coffee varieties. The producers are studying the health and yields of each variety to determine the best commercialization of the area. They harvest, depulp, and process each variety separately, and cup each lot individually to determine ultimate quality and inform their direction for the future. They also experiment with processing by variety, to taste the impact of each different method and level of mucilage removal and observe which processes perform better for each variety.
